The title is in reference to two family members, both of whom got put in position of having to walk-off prior to a walk-off because of previously purchased tickets to a Broadway show (and not in reference to the book "Tuck Everlasting" which was published in 1975, the year I was born). They got out of Shea in a little better shape than SNY broadcaster and occasional blog reader Gary Cohen, who left, the victim of an appendicitis attack. Get well soon, Gary!!
In the meantime, a few quick notes on walk-off #339 as it's late and I have an early day of work on Sunday.
* The Mets have nine walk-off wins this season. That's more than they had all of last season.
* The Mets have won three games on walk-off "somethings" by Chris Woodward, with the somethings being a home run, a single, and the 12th walk-off sacrifice fly in team history.
* For the first time in team history, the Mets have had two walk-off sacrifice flies in the same season.
* This was the first walk-off win to come in a doubleheader since Game 2 of the August 22, 1999 doubleheader against the Cardinals, a game won on an Edgardo Alfonzo single.
* Woodward joins Ron Swoboda, Mike Marshall and George Foster as the only Mets to go 0-4 and get a walk-off RBI in the same game. Woodward is the only one of the quartet to win the game with a sacrifice fly (Swoboda won on a walk, the other two on fielders choices). Foster also boasts an 0-5 walk-off line, which came on July 31, 1983 in a 1-0 12-inning win over the Pirates in Game 2 of a doubleheader.
* Mets who have beaten the Giants with a walk-off sacrifice fly: Woodward, Ken Singleton and Mackey Sasser.
* Brian Wilson joins Bill Wilson as Wilson's who suffered walk-off losses vs the Mets. Bill's came on a Donn Clendenon 15th inning HR against the Phillies on June 19, 1971.
* Thanks to Jason at "Faith and Fear in Flushing," we know that both Darryl Strawberry and Lastings Milledge scored their first major league run as the winning run in a walk-off win. Strawberry came in on a home run by George Foster, and thus had a much easier path to home plate than Milledge.
True Mettedges know...The Mets have won 69 times in walk-off fashion by the final score of 3-2. It is the most common final score among all Mets walk-off wins.
